Bearing in mind Morehouse’s Beloved Train & Graduate Thomas ‘TJ’ Wells”

The Morehouse University Division of Sports is deeply saddened to announce the death of precious assistant train and pleased alumnus Thomas “T.J.” Wells’ 74, who served the Maroon Tigers with difference for practically 4 decades and leaves a championship legacy that helped specify the success of Morehouse track & & area and go across nation.

A participant of the Morehouse Class of 1974, Train Wells was a two-sport student-athlete that played football and ran track for the Maroon Tigers. Signing up with the track & & area mentoring personnel in 1987, his enthusiasm for competitors, mentorship, and service rollovered right into an outstanding coaching career, where he partnered with Head Coach Willie Hillside to lead Morehouse to 38 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championships in cross country, interior, and exterior track & & field.

Coach Wells’ newest success came this season, when the Maroon Tigers caught the inaugural SIAC Indoor Track & & Area Championship title in February 2025 This followed the 2024 Cross Country Champion that the Maroon Tigers captured. Under his advice, Morehouse created countless All-SIAC athletes, NCAA nationwide qualifiers, and student-leaders that personified the goal of the University both on and off the track.

Coach Wells committed 38 years to developing student-athletes with the same energy, honesty, and job ethic he demonstrated as a player and graduate. His determined dedication to Morehouse athletics was marked by humility, leadership, and a profound idea in the power of education and sport.
