HBCU baseball team loses game to SEC school by how many runs again?

The Ole Miss Rebels delivered a historic performance on Wednesday night, dismantling Alcorn State 29-1 in a lopsided midweek game.
The No. 6-ranked SEC school set a new program record for runs scored in a single game, surpassing the previous mark of 28 set in 1989 against Illinois College.
Ole Miss (26-7) wasted no time asserting dominance, scoring six runs in the first inning and forcing Alcorn State starter Myles Dews out of the game after recording just one out. Judd Utermark opened the floodgates with a two-run double, followed by Isaac Humphrey and Campbell Smithwick, who each added RBI doubles. By the end of the first inning, the Rebels held a commanding 6-0 lead.
The offensive onslaught continued unabated. In the second inning, Smithwick struck again with another RBI double, and by the end of the third, Utermark had launched a two-run homer to center field, pushing the lead to 11-0.

Luke Cheng added to the fireworks with two home runs, including a three-run shot in the fifth inning that capped off a nine-run frame. Ethan Surowiec contributed a towering three-run homer in the sixth to seal Ole Miss’ record-setting 29th run.
In total, Ole Miss tallied 23 hits, including five home runs and six doubles. Cheng’s multi-homer game was the first of his career, while Surowiec’s blast marked his first collegiate home run. Every Rebels starter reached base at least once during the shortened game.
On the mound, right-hander Cade Townsend earned his first win of the season with an efficient outing. He pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters.
Alcorn State (4-25) managed its lone run in the seventh inning when Chris Tillman crossed home plate on a groundout by Bralon Robinson. The game was called shortly thereafter due to the mercy rule.
Wednesday was not the first time Ole Miss made headlines against Alcorn State in a baseball game. In 2022, Ole Miss infielder Peyton Chatagnier scored from first base after a failed pick-off attempt during a 16-1 win over the Braves.
