WWE WRESTLEMANIA 41 LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE
Higher! Higher! Feel the intensity! She’s burning at the stake like a witch, but I’m just here to live blog this pro wrestling event for you, folks.
Typically, I don’t cover the preshow in detail, but they presented a video package for a AAA/NXT Worlds Collide event in June and followed it up by announcing that WWE acquired AAA *and* used it to transition to Rey Mysterio revealing he’s not medically cleared and will be substituted by Rey Fenix in his match against El Grande Americano tonight, so there you go.
Later on, there’s also a segment about Bayley mysteriously getting injured backstage by definitely not Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, with Adam Pearce informing the both of them that they won’t be escaping from a title match tomorrow night so easily.
The main event begins with the customary montage of talent arriving at the arena.
Next, we see a video narrated by Triple H covering heroes, villains, and legendary tales.
Triple H enters the ring, microphone in hand.
He expresses that it’s his privilege to welcome us to Las Vegas, where for the very first time, right here, right now (is Van Halen rocking in America?), everyone present is being broadcast LIVE to the entire world. He then greets us with a warm welcome to WrestleMania, accompanied by an explosive display of pyro.
GUNTHER (c) vs. “Main Event” Jey Uso (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)
Circling, taking it easy, soaking in the ambiance, collar and elbow into the corner, GUNTHER throws a right hand but Uso responds with a MASSIVE right that sends the Ring General crashing onto his backside, prompting him to scramble outside! Inside the ring, exchanging strikes, Jey gets the better of the encounter and once again, GUNTHER retreats to the outside for a breather.
Back in the ring, another exchange, and the Ring General knocks Uso clean off the top and to the floor, posing as if he has won while referee Shaun Bennett counts. Jey manages to beat the count, and GUNTHER takes his time, methodically marching over and chopping him into the corner, each chop battering him further… BUT USO EXPLODES WITH A SPEAR FOR TWO!
Right punches in the corner, forcing GUNTHER to cover up, but once the Ring General gets a chop in, it’s a real showstopper! Uso regains his footing and takes control of the match, heading back to the top, GUNTHER scales to meet him, a superplex launches Uso into the air and a big shotgun dropkick follows! Tenryu Powerbomb… JEY USO WON’T STAY DOWN!
Yet another spear, Jey returns to the top, diving splash, a deep hook of the leg… GUNTHER KICKS OUT! He goes out and back in, the Ring General with a diving splash of his own, only managing a count of two before locking in the Gojira Clutch! Jey endures, forcing knees in the corner, a chop sends Uso flying out to the apron!
Back in the ring, back on his feet, Jey implores him for more, GUNTHER lands a chop and Uso brushes it off even as he collapses to his knees! Wrist control, swapping elbows in the center of the ring, exchanging lariats, neither man yields an inch, the Ring General forces him into the ropes with a boot and Jey bursts off with a lariat that flattens the champion!
Gojira Clutch transitioned into a German suplex, both wrestlers take a moment to recuperate, Uso runs into the dropkick but escapes the Tenryu Powerbomb and unleashes a release powerbomb of his own! A superkick brings the champion to his knees, another superkick, a spear, and Jey ascends to the top, landing the diving splash!
Back on the top, another splash, back up again, a Shadows Over Hell splash to the back! Jey traps him in his own Gojira Clutch… IS IT OVER?!
Jey Uso secures victory by submission with the Gojira Clutch, becoming the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Post-match, “Big” Jim Uso joins in the ring, and the Usos share an extended celebration together, both inside the ring and up through the audience.
Rick Rubin, Criss Angel, and a football player dealing with a sort of bowel obstruction (claiming to have a tight end?) are spotted in the crowd.
