WWE WRESTLEMANIA 41 LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE
Higher! Higher! Feel the heat! She burns at the stake like a sorceress, but I’m just here to liveblog this pro wrestling event for you, folks.
Typically, I don’t liveblog the details of the preshow, but they showed a video package for AAA/NXT Worlds Collide in June and followed it with the announcement that WWE acquired AAA *and* used it to transition to Rey Mysterio revealing that he’s not cleared and will be substituted by Rey Fenix in his match against El Grande Americano this evening, so there you have it.
Later on, there’s also a mention of Bayley mysteriously getting injured backstage by definitely not Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, with Adam Pearce informing both of them that they won’t escape a title match tomorrow night so easily.
The main program commences with the customary montage of performers arriving at the venue.
Next, we see a video narrated by Triple H about heroes, villains, and legendary tales.
Triple H stands in the ring, microphone in hand.
He expresses his honor in welcoming us to Las Vegas, where for the very first time, right here, right now (is Van Halen rocking the USA?), everyone present is being seen LIVE by the entire world. He then invites us to WrestleMania, as a barrage of pyro explodes.
GUNTHER (c) vs. “Main Event” Jey Uso (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)
Circling, taking it slow, soaking in the ambiance, collar and elbow into the corner, GUNTHER lands a right hand but Uso retaliates with a HUGE right that sends the Ring General crashing onto his back and scrambling out to the floor! Back inside, they exchange blows, and Jey comes out on top, prompting GUNTHER to retreat to the floor for a breather.
Back inside, another exchange occurs and the Ring General chops Uso directly off the top and to the floor, posing as if he has won while referee Shaun Bennett counts. Jey beats the count, and GUNTHER takes his time, walking slowly and chopping him into the corner, each chop hitting him harder… BUT USO EXPLODES WITH A SPEAR FOR TWO!
Powerful punches in the corner, forcing GUNTHER to guard himself, but once the Ring General lands one chop, it’s a jaw-dropping chop! Uso gets back up and regains dominance of the match, heading back up top, with GUNTHER climbing to meet him, a superplex sends Uso soaring and the follow-up shotgun dropkick lands! Tenryu Powerbomb… JEY USO WON’T STAY DOWN!
Another spear, Jey climbs back up top, diving splash, deep hook of the leg… GUNTHER KICKS OUT! He exits and re-enters, the Ring General performs a diving splash of his own, only a two count and locks in the Gojira Clutch! Jey endures, delivering brutal knees in the corner, a chop knocks Uso clean out to the apron!
Back inside, back on his feet, Jey challenges him for more, GUNTHER delivers a chop and Uso chuckles it off even while he drops to his knees! Wrist control, exchanging elbows in the center of the ring, striking lariats, neither competitor yields ground, the Ring General pushes him into the ropes with a boot and Jey bursts off with a lariat that takes the champion down!
Gojira Clutch countered into a German suplex, both competitors take a moment to catch their breath, Uso rushes into the dropkick but escapes the Tenryu Powerbomb and executes a release powerbomb of his own! A superkick brings the champion to his knees, another superkick follows, a spear, and Jey ascends to the top for the diving splash!
Back up high, another splash, once more up top, a Shadows Over Hell splash to the back! Jey locks him in his very own Gojira Clutch… IS IT OVER?!
Jey Uso wins by submission with the Gojira Clutch, becoming your new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Following the match, “Big” Jim Uso enters the ring and the Usos share a long celebration together, both in the ring and throughout the crowd.
Rick Rubin, Criss Angel, and a football player displaying some kind of bowel obstruction (it’s claimed he has a tight end?) are spotted in the audience.
